The MEDLI Virtual Series is an inspiring and comprehensive professional learning experience designed to strengthen, elevate, and unify dual language immersion (DLI) leadership and instructional practice across California and beyond. Rooted in research and centered on equity, biliteracy, and multilingual excellence, MEDLI brings together district leaders, site administrators, board members, teachers, and community champions to plan and lead powerful multilingual programs for the 2026–2027 school year.

MEDLI is a nationwide summer institute offering strategies and planning frameworks adaptable across dual language and multilingual models, state standards, and local program contexts.

Governing for Multilingual Futures: Board Leadership for Dual Language Immersion

This dynamic, informative session equips school board members to make strong, informed decisions that support, expand, and protect Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs. Grounded in the California English Learner Roadmap and Global California 2030, the session clarifies the board’s role in advancing multilingual equity and long-term sustainability by examining what defines high-quality DLI programs, the governance levers that enable them to thrive, and the system conditions, such as staffing, access, accountability, and community engagement, that require intentional oversight.

Strengthening Biliteracy Instruction: High-Impact Strategies for Dual Language Teachers

This three-part learning experience supports new and experienced dual language teachers in strengthening biliteracy instruction aligned to the four pillars of Dual Language Education. Presented bilingually, the series deepens understanding of essential DLI components, biliteracy development, and language-specific instructional practices while modeling effective instruction in both languages. Participants engage in reflection and explore practical, student-centered approaches that promote strong language development, content learning, and safe, inclusive, high-quality learning environments.

Board members will leave with:

  • Instructional strategies that strengthen oracy, reading, and writing across both languages
  • Language-specific teaching practices that support biliteracy and strategic transfer
  • Practical tools for implementing Common Biliteracy Components throughout the day

DLI Teacher Curriculum Development Series: Designing Comprehensive High-Quality Biliteracy Units

This powerful, hands-on 4-part curriculum series walks educators step-by-step through the full process of designing integrated, biliteracy-driven thematic units that support bilingualism, academic achievement, and equity. Designed for new and experienced dual language teachers, the series focuses on planning comprehensive biliteracy units that intentionally integrate cross-linguistic instruction, designated/targeted and integrated ELD, strategic scaffolding, oral language development, and high-quality content learning. Teachers will explore how to align language and content goals across both languages while creating cohesive units that honor students’ linguistic assets and support meaningful access to grade-level standards.

Teacher Outcomes

Teachers will walk away with:

  • A clear process for designing comprehensive biliteracy units from start to finish
  • Strategies for embedding cross-linguistic connections and intentional bridging
  • Practical approaches to integrating ELD, scaffolds, and oral language routines within content instruction
  • Tools for aligning language objectives, content standards, and assessments across both languages
  • Planning templates and exemplars to support high-quality, student-centered biliteracy instruction
