Dr. Susana Ibarra Johnson is an Assistant Professor of Bilingual Education and TESOL in the School of Teacher Preparation, Administration, and Leadership at New Mexico State University. She is a nationally recognized scholar in bilingual education and a co-author of The Translanguaging Classroom: Leveraging Student Bilingualism for Learning (García, Johnson, & Seltzer, 2017), a widely cited work that has shaped translanguaging theory and practice in K–12 contexts.

Her research critically engages translanguaging pedagogy within bilingual and English language development settings, with particular attention to equity, identity, and sociocultural responsiveness in curriculum and instruction. Her work is grounded in her own experiences as a bilingual learner, teacher, and school leader, and is informed by more than a decade of applied practice, including roles as a professional development specialist, associate researcher for WIDA, and director of bilingual multicultural education programs in New Mexico.

Dr. Ibarra Johnson contributes to the field through leadership at multiple levels. She currently serves as Vice President of the Association of Bilingual Education of New Mexico (ABENM), Communications Chair of the AERA Bilingual Education Research Special Interest Group, and Western Region Executive Board Member for the National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE). Her academic and service commitments reflect a sustained dedication to advancing research, policy, and practice in bilingual and multilingual education.
