Salary Schedule: CSO Salary Range $92,846 - $159,514 per year*

General Description

The California Teachers Association is one of California's largest and most dynamic professional education and labor organizations. Instruction and Professional Development is a field-based department that provides research, policy, training and organizing support to CTA leaders, members and staff. The primary responsibility for the staff person in this position is to conduct, analyze, prepare, present, and manage educational research in support of the policy and program work at all levels of the organization. IPD staff coordinate and provide professional development through CTA Conferences and regional and local trainings. This position requires working knowledge of federal and state education policies, laws, regulations and programs. This position also requires knowledge and work in all areas related to assessment. The ability to work in social media would be beneficial.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Conduct, analyze and supervise education research.
  • Develop position papers, policy, legislation and other resource materials related to curriculum, instruction, staff development, assessment and education issues.
  • Prepare and conduct briefings on education issues and policies.
  • Work on issues related to assessment and supporting educators in working with assessment.
  • Represent CTA regarding educational research and policies to various California state agencies and departments, federal agencies and other organizations.
  • Provide organizing, membership engagement and bargaining assistance to chapters on issues related to professional development and other education issues.
  • Develop teacher leadership programs.
  • Act as consultant on IPD issues to CTA State Council committees, Board task forces and workgroups and other CTA committees as assigned.
  • Develop and deliver IPD programs and services to leadership, members and staff through various media, including but not limited to, web-based training, workshops, technical assistance, and individual consultation.
  • Perform such other related duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director or his/her designee.

Qualifications - Minimum Required

  • An applicable BS/BA degree. Advanced degree in education or related field preferred.
  • Broad understanding of the critical issues facing public education and the education profession, especially in California.
  • Experience in education policy and program development related to both state and federal levels.
  • Working knowledge of, and demonstrated successful experience with, issues attending to assessment.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct and direct applied education research, analyze information and present the results in a coherent and organized manner.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills with a demonstrated ability to write and speak articulately to members, staff and public groups on behalf of CTA.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide trainings and ability to facilitate processes with large and small groups as they discuss, plan and implement changes to improve teaching and learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide web-based trainings and presentations.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer technology, Microsoft Suite and the ability to learn and use the Association's software programs.
  • Ability to travel regularly, obtain and maintain a valid California driver's license.
